Alex is in love with her best friend, Vicki, her mother has dissapeared and she sets fire to things in her spare time. Vicki comes from an abusive home and wants Alex to run away with her. Alex is a bit of a nerd and a teachers pet, so takes advantage of this by trying to seduce her drippy school teacher. Alex watches as Vicki, unable to escape her terrible homelife and an psychological wreck, sets alight to herself and burns to death.

Carmen Elias and Susi Sanchez star in director Juan Carlos Claver's drama exploring Spain's "social danger" laws through the story of two lesbian lovers whose relationship is marred by tragedy. As the film opens, middle-aged Elvira is saved from a suicide attempt and charged with the murder of her longtime lover Pilar. As Elvira's memories come flooding back, the viewer is transported the early 1970s, when young teachers Elvira and Pilar first fell in love. When Pilar's mother discovers that her daughter is involved in a lesbian relationship, she sends the frightened girl to an asylum where electroshock therapy is employed to "cure" her perversion. Though forced to endure year after tormenting year of psychological reconditioning, Pilar clings to her love of Elvira as her only true happiness. Years later, Pilar and Elvira are reunited. But Pilar is different now, and after years of abusive treatment by misguided doctors, her relationship with Elvira seems destined to end in tragedy.

3 on a Match (1999)

A lesbian couple's differing views on parenthood leads to an unusual romantic triangle in this independent comedy drama. Claire (Janet Lark) and Beth (Erica Shaffer) are lovers who have been living together for almost a year. Beth wants to take their relationship to the next level by having a baby, but Claire is uncertain if she's ready for that sort of commitment and responsibility. As the bickering between the two grows, Beth decides she wants to have a child not matter how Claire feels about it, and when a close friend invites them on a weekend long party in the country, Beth sees a golden opportunity for a one-night-stand with a man that could give her the baby she wants. Beth sets her sights on David (Gregg Hoffman), who is smart, good-looking, and well-mannered, but David turns out not to be that easy to seduce -- in part because he's become deeply infatuated with Claire.

La Bestia nel cuore (2005)

Sabina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) is introduced to us in a cemetery where she is arranging for the interment of her dead parents: the mood for the story is subtly set. Sabina is a dubbing actress for translating films into Italian, a 'sell-out' acting job compared to the life of her live-in boyfriend Franco (Alessio Boni) who is a stage actor being tempted to accept a role in a TV series which pays more money than the stage. Sabina confesses she wants to get pregnant, she does, and with her pregnancy she begins to have nightmares of shadowy childhood memories. She is afraid to discuss these with Franco, or with her best friend Emilia (Stefania Rocca) who is blind and has been in love with Sabina since childhood. It seems the only person with whom she can confide her secret fears is her brother Daniele (Luigi Lo Cascio) who has moved from Italy to Charlottesville, VA where he is a professor at the University and has a happy family life with wife Anna (Lucy Akhurst) and two children. Sabina flies to the US to be with her brother and in the course of their reunion the two siblings uncover the beasts in their hearts: sexual abuse from their father now departed. How this discovery alters their lives is the dénouement of the film.

Bobbie's Girl (2002)

I expected a Made-for-TV-type movie here, but got a much richer and far more touching story. A little boy is taken in by two women in Ireland when his parents die - and one of the women soon finds she has breast cancer. She isn't exactly naturally maternal to begin with, and having to deal with breast cancer makes her even less able to make the child feel loved.
The story doesn't attempt to make saints of anyone, and as such it feels very realistic. Thomas Sangster as the little boy puts in a marvelous performance that makes the film the most moving portrayal of a child since Britain's "Hollow Reed." It is a beautiful film about responsibility, life and death which anyone can relate to.

Yuenfang, a refugee originally from Shanghai who escapes the city to Taiwan following the Communists' civil war win in China in 1949. She works as a restaurant hostess, where she becomes a mentor to Juanjuan, who reminds her of her previous lover who took her affections, Wubao, who died during their escape to Taiwan. However, Juanjuan falls for a guest at the restaurant, a very unpleasant gangster, Ko, and they enter into a life of violence and drugs, leaving Yuenfang to come to terms with the fact that she may not see her again.

Prinzessin (2006)

Birgit Grosskopf's hard-hitting debut feature film depicts four cigarette-smoking, alcohol-drinking, troublesome adolescents, who wander in between the concrete skyscrapers of downtrodden West-German suburbia. These uncouth youths are surprisingly not boys but girls, with attitude, quick-tempers and foul-mouths, who violently vent their scorn on any unfortunate soul who gets in their way. Surrounded by a society that is obsessed with health and sex, the alienated foursome are left to prick-tease their male peers and pick fights with their female rivals. Grosskopf's fine direction is coupled with a witty yet gritty script that contains daring sexual humour and brutal imagery. This is a fascinating and coldly told tale of friendship, abandonment and the beauty of youth, minus the innocence.
