Female Perversions (1997)

Dresses, lipsticks, sex - the "perversions" (and neuroses) of Eve, a young, very successful lawyer. Her days are a tightrope act between extreme eloquence and frosty toughness on the one side, and scaring vulnerability on the other. The climax of her career shall be the possibly forthcoming appointment as a judge, but this step seems to be interrupted by her kleptomanian sister Mad who is arrested after one of her raids. Eve travels to Mad's town to stand by her in the jail. Their struggle about Mad's illness evokes suppressed conflicts. Eve stays at her sister's flat where she meets a girl that fights with its budding femininity.

"Carmilla" is an adaptation of a short story written by Sheridan Le Fanu.The film is really pleasant to watch with noteworthy performances by Ione Skye and Meg Tilly.It's atmospheric and strangely sensual with plenty of spooky locations.Highly recommended especially if you're into very subtle horror cinema.

Sarah, a San Francisco accountant, moves into a new apartment building to be near her new boyfriend Jake, a writer with a case of writers block. When Jake has trouble with intimacy with Sarah, she escapes by eavesdropping on others people's phone lines and soon suspects that a man's voice on a phone sex line is a serial killer that is killing prostitutes all over the city on a nightly basis. This film got a lot of exposure at Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals. It's actually similar to another lesbian themed, but in that case set "anywhere in western Germany" and the "foreigner" is Iranian and not Polish: "Fremde Haut" (or "Taking off the Veil") both having been shown here in Brazil in these last two months. Both pictures are German "indies", with German women, both stereotypically Aryan blonds not previously drawn to lesbian relations, but having suffered at the hands of macho German males. Both are lower middle class working German women, and they both fall for mysterious foreign women with immigration problems and bigger criminal accusations or issues.
In this film's case, the working class Aryan female falls for a Polish illegal immigrant, under very unusual circumstances. They both live in prefabricated, popular apartments in the outskirts of a city (which in time reveals itself as Leipzig or perhaps deep East Berlin). They lead everyday life with some humor and resignation.

Das Leben der Leipziger Paketbotin Dora verläuft ereignislos zwischen Plattenbau, Arbeit und Stammkneipe. Bis die unter Mordverdacht stehende, polnische Barfrau Jola völlig verstört vor ihrer Tür steht. Dora nimmt sie bei sich auf und versteckt sie vor der Polizei. Die beiden Frauen freunden sich zaghaft an und Dora verliebt sich gar in die geheimnisvolle Untermieterin. Da entkräften sich die Vorwürfe gegen Jola, doch um deren Weggang zu verhindern, täuscht Dora weiterhin vor, die Exekutive suche fieberhaft nach ihr.

This avant-garde black&white film from Belgian director Chantal Akerman has its merits but to my opinion is outdated today. It's still an enjoyable watch, but many of you could find it extremely pretentious. Nevertheless it's a historic movie. And for that matter, Jim Jarmusch couldn't be what he is today, without having watched Akerman's films.

For more than a month, eating only powered sugar, a woman tries to deal with a breakup: she paints her room twice, removes the furniture, writes and rewrites a letter to her lover, clarifying all she had said. She spreads the pages on the floor. She lies down and waits. Finally, her sugar eaten, she is hungry and leaves. She flags down a truck; she and the trucker drive through the dark, stopping at a diner and bars. He asks for a hand job, she complies. He talks about his wife, children, and sex life. She arrives at the flat of her lover, a woman, who tells her she cannot stay. She says she is hungry, so her lover feeds her then allows her to stay the night. They make love.

The film is inspired by the life of deaf-and-blind teacher Theresa Chan. It premiered as the Director's Fortnight selection in the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. It was also the official entry from Singapore for the 78th Academy Awards in the foreign-language category. In December 2005, the Academy body disqualified the film on grounds that it was not "foreign" enough as the dialogue is mainly in English. Out of ninety-three minutes, the film only has two and a half minutes of dialogue. "Be with Me" is the first film in Singapore to explicitly feature a lesbian relationship.

Running on Empty Dreams (2009)
